DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE

The Department of Political Science was established in 2005 with 4 Guest Faculties and 17 students as part of Kokrajhar Campus of Gauhati University. However, in 2009 the Kokrajhar Campus of Gauhati University has been upgraded to a full fledged State University as per the Bodoland University Act 2009, passed in the Assam legislative Assembly. In 2012, the Department becomes full fledged with seven permanent faculties and at present the department has 120 students in PG Courses (2nd & 4th Semesters). Other than PG Courses the department also offers Ph. D and M. Phil programmes. At present the department has 16 Ph.D. Scholars and 8 M. Phil. Scholars. Among those scholars 2 Ph. D Scholars and 6 M. Phil Scholars has been awarded degrees. Besides that the department also offers PG Diploma Courses of one year duration (two semesters) on Human Rights Education with the intake capacity of 20. The department also runs Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies. The centre conducts seminars, workshop, lectures series etc. from time to time.

MISSION

To start P.G. Course in Sociology, P G Diploma Course in Gender Studies, Rural Development, Peace & Conflict Studies and North-East Studies.

VISION

The Department has a vision to act as the ‘hub’ of policy study for the whole Bodoland area besides becoming a ‘centre of excellence’ subsuming the area of Human Rights; Rural Development; Peace, Women and Tribal Study within a decade.

OBJECTIVES

Teaching and Research is the prime objective of the department; however it will endeavour to disseminate knowledge in the areas of value education, humanism, liberalism and multiculturalism. The department is trying for creating a pool of social scientist that can face the future with confidence and professional zeal, for that matter it will regularly arrange Alumni Meet, Seminar, Workshop and Training Programme.
